Rick Springfield
Since beginning his solo career, Grammy winner Rick Springfield has released 17 top-forty hit songs including the iconic “Jessie’s Girl” as well as “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers” and “Affair of the Heart.” He has sold over 19 million records and remains one of the 80s pop music icons.
Springfield began his musical career at an early age, playing piano at age nine, playing guitar at age 10 and writing music at age 14. A native Australian, Springfield started his solo career in 1971. His first hit song, “Speak to the Sky,” quickly rose to the top of the charts in Australia. In 1972, he relocated to Los Angeles and recorded his first and second solo albums: “Beginnings” and “Comic Book Heroes.” His third album, “Wait for Night,” produced his first top-forty single, “Take a Hand.”
Dissatisfied with his music career, Springfield turned to television, receiving minor roles in several television shows and movies before landing a spot as Dr. Noah Drake on the popular soap opera “General Hospital.” It was during his time as a soap star that he released his first breakout album, “Working Class Dog.” The release of his fourth album vaulted Springfield into instant popularity with the number-one hit song, “Jessie’s Girl,” which won him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Performance in 1982.
Since his success with “Jessie’s Girl,” Springfield has produced another 15 top-forty hit singles. Today, he maintains a busy touring schedule and continues to make recurring guest star appearances on “General Hospital.”
Patty Smyth
Patty Smyth joined Scandal in 1981 just before the band released their first self-titled album which climbed to 32 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart. The hit songs “Goodbye to You” and “Love’s Got a Line” paved the way for their second album, “The Warrior,” which sold over one million copies. Its title track was their first top-ten hit song.
Following the group’s breakup in 1984, Patty Smyth began a successful solo career and released her first solo album, “Never Enough.” Her duet with Don Henley, “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” which debuted on her second album, peaked at number two on Billboard’s Hot 100. In 1994, Smyth was nominated for a Grammy and an Academy Award following the inclusion of “Look What Love Has Done,” a song co-written by Smyth, on the soundtrack for the film “Junior.”
In 2004, Scandal reunited and in 2006 produced a compilation CD of their greatest hits as part of VH1’s “We Are the Eighties” series. Today, Scandal remains a staple on most 80s music compilation albums with hit songs like “Hands Tied” and “Beat of a Heart.”
