No Fowl Notes Sounded in State Fair Chicken Calling Contest

Bonnie Swalwell of Newton took home first place in the Ladies Chicken Calling Contest, judged Thursday, August 8, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Fourteen contestants, some from as far away as Virginia, put their fowl calling linguistics to the test.

Julie Steinkamp from Wall Lake claimed second place.

Brenda Freeman of Ames earned third place honors.

The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
