Berry Pies Win Big at State Fair

Marianne Carlson of Jefferson won first place and a $200 cash award in the Tribute to Bessie: Scrumptious Berry Pie Competition judged Saturday, August 17, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Kay Smith of Des Moines earned second place and a $100 cash award. Susan Jones of Winterset claimed third place and a $50 cash award.

Entries were judged on flavor, texture and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and nearly 6,400 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
