Youth Artisans Win State Fair Cake Decorating Titles

The confectionary creations of young bakers were on display in the Youth Decorated Cakes competition, judged Monday, August 5, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Claire Tigges of Waukee won First Place Overall. Brooklyn Walz of Marion claimed Second Place Overall and Charlotte Watnem of Fort Dodge earned Third Place Overall.

In the Sculpted Cake class of competition, Charlotte Watnem won first place.

Brooklyn Walz earned first place in the Single Cake class. Nora Hardisty of Waukee claimed second place and Caydence Schoening of Altoona took third place.

Claire Tigges won first place in the Tiered Cake class. Marisa Shoup of Clive claimed second place and Charlotte Watnem of Fort Dodge earned third place.

Entries were judged on execution, appearance, difficulty, design and use of edible applications.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 140 divisions, 726 classes and over 6,400 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
